Four week class starting Sunday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. in preparation for the Brevard Kennel Club’s upcoming annual event, B Match and Scent Works, to be held at Fox Lake in Titusville on Sunday, October 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Scent Work is set up as practice which is required so they can eventually hold trials for Scent Work. This will be an excellent time to practice with your dog in a new environment in preparation for competing if so desired. So, come and join us. It will be lots of fun and after the four week class you may continue with our monthly workshop – Scent works which meets the second Sunday of each month.
Scent work is a canine sport created to mimic professional scent tasks, such as, drug detection or food detection. The dog and handler work as a team to find a hidden target while ignoring distractors such as food or toys. The three odors used in training are birch, anise, and cloves. After a dog finds the odor, he is rewarded with food or a toy.
Workshops are open to all dogs 6 months and older and limited to 10 participants. Handlers must bring a cardboard box which has flaps and plenty of smelly treats. The handler should collect different size boxes (6-10) for home use.
Workshops are $10 per session for members and $15 per session for non-members unless stated in individual workshops. Workshops are scheduled for 1 to 2 hours. Workshops are scheduled once a month.
