Please refer to Class Schedule for class dates and times
In order to attend this class, Puppies must be between the ages of 8 and 16 weeks and have their first 2 DHLPP (distemper) vaccines. AKC S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility) is a new and exciting program designed for dog owners and their puppies, giving them a beginning foundation for a lifelong relationship between the owner(s) and puppy. All puppies are welcome to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program including purebreds and mixed breeds. The instructor for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is a certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator through the American Kennel Club.
The class teaches you how to best communicate with your puppy and the puppy is given the opportunity to socialize with other puppies in a safe environment. Our classes are aimed at earning the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy distinction, including information on puppy-raising questions such as housetraining, chewing, and the most effective way to teach skills such as coming when called, sit, down, and leave it. You and your puppy attend six weeks of basic training class and then on the seventh week, your instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing the test, you’ll get an application to send to AKC® for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program.
Puppies passing the 10-step test, may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
Puppies must have their first distemper and the first booster that is given two to three weeks after the initial distemper. We highly recommend all puppies receive the first Bordetella (upper respiratory vaccine).
